Labour conference organisers are facing complaints they were too heavy handed in throwing out an 82-year-old heckler.
Complaint over heckler treatment
I am appalled by the scenes on TV of 82 year old Walter Wolfgang being bundled out of the Labour Party conference. It was the reaction you expect from a Dictatorship not the British Labour Party.
Mr Wolfgang shouted “nonsense” to something Jack Straw said. If any response was needed to it should be “Doh!”.
He has been a member of the Labour Party for 57 years, yes longer than Tony Blair has been alive! I think he has the right to at least a single word of protest over something as contentious as the Iraq War!
I feel increasingly that the UK is sliding into political trouble. We had years of Tory government without much effective opposition and now we have A Labour government without any opposition.
Thatcherism almost destroyed the country but it’s main achievement is that it destroyed the Tory Party, they are still squabbling and unable to agree what the Party is about. I have no interest in seeing them in power but they have a job and that is the official opposition and they are unable to do that!
When people feel that the mainstream political parties no longer reflect their views or even care about them then there is the danger of extremist parties exploiting the political vacuum that is created. Mr Wolfgang will be well aware of this, he had to flee Nazi Germany in 1937.
WTF? The guy’s perfectly entitled to express his opinion!
And perhaps the reason they don’t want to be heckled is because their position on the war is IMHO indefensible, and there’s the same bullshit excuses every time Straw or Blair discusses it. Gah.
